The Spiritual Significance of Halloween

Why do we celebrate Halloween?

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1.

This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes.

Spiritual significance of Halloween

Halloween is considered a powerful turning point in the wheel of the year, signifying the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Halloween is the time when people release and let go of negative and lower energies that hold them back and celebrate the new energy that will eventually take its place.

For those who want to experience the spiritual effects of Halloween,  just take some time to cleanse your energy with light and feeling of love. Some people take a salt bath or do cleansing meditation to keep their energy clear and protected. Even nature models this act for us, when the trees shed and let go of their old leaves.

Tap into the energy of the cycle of life to give tribute to those in the afterlife, by lighting a candle, serving out their favorite food, or simply saying a prayer or blessing.

The Book ‘Life is a Treasure Hunt’ shows how to gain clarity and mindfulness, so we can let go of what holds us back, overcome our fears, and regenerate our energy to embrace change and build our future.
